Valentine to My First Crush
(age 8)

Your love is vermilion.

Your love is crepe.

It is something the Jehovah’s Witnesses cannot attend.

Poem

For Shannon

I always wanted a sister
But I got a best friend instead.

My baby-faced flannel stumbled into school lockers,
With dreams that didn’t fit inside.
Stumbled into you.
You flipped your hair at categories
And made me laugh instead.

I never got a sister.
But okay, I guess I’ll keep you. :).

You’re the immovable rock, dirt-packed and dusty in my backyard.

I couldn’t dislodge you if I were 14 with better blood pressure.

You’re loyal through the wind, the crinkled leaves, the beer-cooler sweat.

The confident kind that won’t be pushed.

You’ll always be my sister.
We laugh with the same smile.
Always looking in the same direction
At something crazy-stupid-hilarious
That only we can see.
